Grown to order — delivered in about 15 days
We start it when you order and hand it over once it is established and hardened off. That is what makes the olla work from day one: the roots have already grown down to it before it reaches you.
SKU BAD-MUS
Water it through the olla. That is the only instruction.
A buried terracotta olla releases water at exactly the rate the soil draws it, over a base of well-rotted wood that holds moisture through a hot week. You cannot overwater it and it will not dry out on you. The roots reach the olla before the plant leaves us, so it works from the day it arrives.
Details
A Karnataka landrace rather than the large glossy hybrid sold everywhere. Small fruit carried in clusters, thin skin, few seeds, and it does not turn bitter — the standard complaint about market brinjal.
This is the brinjal for ennegai and for a proper badanekai gojju, where the fruit has to hold together and take up the masala rather than dissolving.
Slow to start and then productive for months. It is the longest-lived annual we grow: six months of cropping or more. That is exactly why it arrives in a filled 12 x 18 inch bag — root run is what decides whether a brinjal runs the full six months or stalls at four.
Snip the growing tip if you see it wilt suddenly. That is shoot borer, and cutting below the damage and discarding it away from the plant is the whole treatment.
Keep it away from your tomato and chilli. All three are the same family and share bacterial wilt, which spreads through wet soil and cannot be cured once it arrives.
