We start it when you order and hand it over once it is established and hardened off. That is what makes the olla work from day one: the roots have already grown down to it before it reaches you.

Water it through the olla. That is the only instruction.
A buried terracotta olla releases water at exactly the rate the soil draws it, over a base of well-rotted wood that holds moisture through a hot week. You cannot overwater it and it will not dry out on you. The roots reach the olla before the plant leaves us, so it works from the day it arrives.

A vigorous climber, so not a balcony-corner plant. It needs something to climb: a terrace railing, a wall net, or a bamboo frame at least six feet tall. Given that, one plant covers the frame and produces steadily for months.
Male flowers appear first and drop without fruiting, which alarms people. That is normal. Female flowers, with a tiny gourd already visible behind the bloom, follow a week or two later.
If fruit sets and then shrivels, pollination failed. Terrace gardens above the third floor often have too few bees; hand-pollinate early in the morning with a cotton bud and the problem disappears.
Keep gourds away from chilli and tomato. Gourds are where whitefly builds up, and whitefly is what carries leaf curl into your solanaceous plants.
