SKU ARA-SHI
Water it through the olla. That is the only instruction.
A buried terracotta olla releases water at exactly the rate the soil draws it, over a base of well-rotted wood that holds moisture through a hot week. You cannot overwater it and it will not dry out on you. The roots reach the olla before the plant leaves us, so it works from the day it arrives.
Details
The answer to a shaded balcony or the ground under a tree, where almost nothing else in this catalogue will crop. Turmeric wants dappled light and resents full afternoon sun.
A long, patient crop with a single payoff. Nothing visible happens above ground for weeks, then it throws up broad leaves and grows steadily until the foliage yellows and dies back at eight or nine months. That is the signal to tip it out.
The rhizomes spread sideways as they bulk up, so width matters more than depth. The filled 12 x 18 inch bag is what the yield depends on — a cramped turmeric gives you thin fingers.
Save two or three fingers from the harvest to replant and the cycle continues indefinitely.
